For over 10 years, Hugo Bélanger has layered his labour on the masked performance through the creation of popular works intended for youth as well as adult audiences. Artistic Director of Théâtre Tout à Trac since 1998, he continues his search for a theatre where the body is engaged in both playful and rigorous work.

The second show of the company, The Green Bird, gave the Quebec public the opportunity to fully discover his work. Acclaimed by the critics, the show was nominated for two important prizes awarded by the Académie Québécoise du Théâtre during the Soirée des Masques 2005: the very prestigious Discovery of the Year, and Best Costume Design.

The company’s third production, Princess Turandot, was awarded with 5 prizes granted by the public and given by Théâtre Denise-Pelletier. It also won the award for Best Text Adaptation by the Académie Québécoise du Théâtre during the Soirée des Masques 2006, as well as being nominated in five other categories.

His growing interest for a theatre that is popular and imaginative led him to perform in the streets as an actor and puppeteer with the theatre company Les Sages Fous, with whom he performed in ten countries in America and in Europe. He also successfully directed MUNCHAÜSEN and Alice in Wonderland, two productions of La Roulotte, the oldest travelling theatre dedicated to youth in Quebec.

Hugo Bélanger has given more than 400 workshops in addition to teaching interpretation in Saint-Hyacinthe College’s theatre program, at Montreal’s Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, at the National School of Circus as well as the National Theatre School of Canada.
